Red Back Jumping spiders

Phidippus texanus commonly known as a Red Backed Jumping Spider or Texas Jumping Spider is found in the Southern USA and into Mexico.  Females are beige with white stripes while males are black with orange/ red colored abdomen.

Housing:

Jumping spiders are small arachnids and don't require large spaces to be comfortable. An acrylic 4x4x7 terrarium is plenty of space.   Adequate Ventilation is a required for this species. 

Decorations can range from natural and live plants, silk plants, Ceramic or plastic décor. Plenty or 3d printed hides and accessories are available online. Some spiders can be sensitive to glues. Magnets can be used to hold objects to the sides of terrariums to make them easy to remove for cleaning. 

a soft substrate like coconut fiber is good for  moisture retention. 

Temperature/ humidity :

These do well in room temperatures but can prefer slightly warmer temperatures.  They have a wide range of temperatures in the wild so are able to adapt well to changes. a heat lamp or heating pad will be required in colder climates. preferred ranges are 70-88F

Humidity:  They do well in a range of humidity from  50-80% Water: Small plastic or ceramic water dishes should be added with filtered or bottled water. Mist the enclosure every 2-4 days.

Feeding:

Young spiderlings will eat fruit flies and pinhead crickets 1-3 times a week.  As they grow they will need to have larger insects. crickets, mealworms,  house flies, and blue bottle flies should be used once they are larger and reach maturity.  

remove any uneaten food to keep their enclosure clean. 

Life Span

The average life span is 1-2 years however 3 years is not too uncommon.
